Pit or the Pedestal?
Every day, we make a choice: stay in the PIT or climb up to the PEDESTAL.
There are many attractive options pulling children and families into the deep pit of excessive screen time, nonstop entertainment, unhealthy comfort foods, and sedentary habits. While these choices may feel easy and convenient, they often lead us further away from health, happiness, and meaningful experiences.
One of the best ways to climb out of the pit and onto the pedestal is to develop a love of nature.
Nature provides children with a sensory-rich world that encourages them to fully use their senses and engage with the environment around them. When children spend time outdoors, they discover, explore, and experience life in ways that no screen can ever provide.
Be ready to witness the magic.
Time in nature boosts confidence, sparks imagination, reduces stress, and naturally encourages children to move, play, and exercise more.
An alarming reality is that many children spend less than 10 minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play. As outdoor activity declines, anxiety often increases, while interest in movement, exercise, and exploration decreases.
The long-term effects of these sedentary indoor habits can include declines in mental, physical, and even spiritual health.
The good news is that every family can begin climbing up the pedestal today.
1. Go Outside—Rain or Shine
Take a nature walk.
Children will:
NOTICE
DISCOVER
COLLECT
Leaves, rocks, flowers, sticks, bugs, and countless treasures waiting to be explored.
2. Walking Means Talking
Nature walks provide wonderful opportunities for conversation.
Ask questions such as:
· What do you see?
· What colors do you notice?
· What sounds do you hear?
· What animal might live here?
Questions encourage curiosity, observation, and meaningful conversation.
3. Slow Down
Take breaks.
Enjoy a healthy snack.
Watch the clouds.
Listen to the birds.
Some of the best conversations happen when we stop rushing.
4. Plan a Scavenger Hunt
Create an age-appropriate scavenger hunt for your family.
Children love searching for:
· Unique rocks
· Different colored leaves
· Flowers
· Animal tracks
A simple scavenger hunt can turn an ordinary walk into an unforgettable adventure.
Nature’s Lasting Gift
The memories created during outdoor adventures can last a lifetime.
Nature has a unique ability to heal, teach, inspire, and connect us to something greater than ourselves. These experiences strengthen our minds, bodies, and souls while creating meaningful family connections.
No screen. No video game. No robot.
Will ever replace the joy of discovering a butterfly, climbing a tree, hearing birds sing, or watching a sunset with someone you love.
Choose the pedestal.
Choose nature.
Your children—and their future—will thank you.
