MEALTIME: MAKE A DATE, DON'T BE LATE
Watch any child playing at a park, in sports, or in the backyard with friends and family. Most of them aren’t worried about their next meal. In fact, many can’t wait to sit down, laugh, and talk about all the fun they just had.
Those experiences simply cannot compare to children sitting on screens — at home, in airports, and sadly, even in schools. Too often they’re no longer interested in mealtime or even moving from a sedentary position to engage in face-to-face conversations.
The Bell That Called Us Home
I remember my mother ringing a bell to let my sisters and me know dinner was ready.
Slowly we would come inside, wash our hands, and gather around a small kitchen table to enjoy the best home-cooked meal.
But what mattered most wasn’t the food.
It was the conversation.
Those small moments — sharing stories, laughing, listening — shaped me and helped set the course of my life.
Why Family Meals Still Matter
Family meals are timeless bonding moments where every family member, young and old, can feel safe sharing what’s on their minds.
There is no screen, video game, or social media platform that can replicate the presence of genuine love, care, and family heritage.
Research shows that youth who share meals with their parents at least five times a week experience better outcomes across many areas of life — including improved school behavior and lower rates of smoking and drinking.
Family meals engage all of our senses:
Sight
Touch
Taste
Smell
And most importantly — listening to one another.
Screens cannot pass down values.
Screens cannot spark creative ideas through conversation.
Screens cannot help families solve problems with compassion.
The Greatest Gift We Can Give Our Children
The greatest gift we can give our children is time.
When we sit down together — without screens — we give them our presence, our stories, our laughter, and our attention.
These moments build resilience, connection, and emotional strength that no technology can replace.
Our Screen Free Play Mission
At Get On Track, our Screen Free Play Days are built on this same belief:
children thrive when they move, play, talk, laugh, and connect in the real world.
Healthy habits don’t start with rules about screens.
They start with replacing screens with meaningful human experiences — playing outside, lifting weights together, sharing meals, and building relationships.
Reprioritizing family mealtime is one of the simplest and most powerful steps any family can take.
It isn’t a burden.
It’s a blessing.
And it might just be the most important daily date you keep with your children
